School Bus Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility
Posted
As a new school year begins, let’s work together to keep students safe on their way to and from school. Bus drivers play a big role, but safety also depends on drivers, parents, and students.
For Drivers
-
Keep a safe distance — buses make frequent stops.
-
Watch for children near bus stops who may cross unexpectedly.
-
Stop for flashing red lights and the extended stop arm — from both directions, unless separated by a median.
-
Slow down in school zones and follow posted speed limits.
-
Failing to stop for a bus in Alberta can mean a $567 fine and 6 demerit points.
For Students
-
Stand back from the curb while waiting.
-
Wait until the bus fully stops and the driver signals to board.
-
Stay seated and listen to the driver.
-
Always cross in front of the bus — make eye contact with the driver, wait for their signal, then check traffic before crossing.
Together, we can make sure every child gets to school and home safely.
