School Councils

School Councils in Alberta were established in 1995, to increase parent and community involvement in the education of children in Alberta. Public schools, including charter schools, are required to attempt to establish School Councils.

The role of School Councils is outlined in the Alberta School Act. School Councils are also regulated by the provincial School Councils Regulation.

At STAR Catholic Schools, we are very supportive of parental involvement through School Councils and encourage parents to get involved. Contact information for our local School Councils can be found here:

Alberta School Councils’ Association (ASCA) is the provincial association for parents on School Councils. Committed to enhancing student success through meaningful involvement, the association advocates positive change in public education from the parent perspective.

Fundraising Societies

Fundraising Societies exist in some of our schools. Fundraising Societies are a formal group of people, incorporated under the Societies Act for the purpose of providing additional financial resources and support to the school. A society is a separate legal entity from the School Council.

To this end a Fundraising Societies Handbook has been created to assist in streamlining the process of establishing a fundraising society and to provide resources that are helpful to groups in completing their projects.
